The theology programme offers a full range of courses and degrees in theology, some of which are required for ordained service in the Church of Norway: B.Th., M.Th., Cand.theol., and Exam in Practical Theology and Ph. D.
The Master degree programme in theology are offered in English. It is a two-year intensive academic course of study, 120 ECTS credits. The master degree programme are designed to accommodate students from both Norway and abroad, especially from cooperating institutions and churches in developing countries in order to offer an opportunity for them to specialize academically in some theological discipline.
A major element of the master programme is the writing of a master thesis on academic terms. In the M.Th. programme the thesis work represents 30 credits. Each student works under the supervision of a tutor. The master programme also include a considerable reading and instruction programme (90 credits).
Applicants to the master programme must document a B.Th. degree from a recognized institution of higher education, or an equivalent educational basis approved by the MHS.
International students should also note that all students whose first language is not English or who have not completed the major bulk of their schooling in English, must proof their English language competency by completing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Results should be sent directly to MHS. Information concerning TOEFL may be obtained from the Educational Testing Service, Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey, USA, 08540. A minimum TOEFL score of 500 or a minimum IELTS score of 5.0 is normally required.
Financing for self-financing degree applicants
Applicants from outside the EU/EEA area must document that they can finance their stay in Norway. Applicants who do not provide satisfactory documented evidence for financing will be rejected regardless of academic qualifications. The Norwegian Immigration Authorities require that you can provide a minimum of NOK 87 600 (approx. 10 000 EUR). This is the minimum amount of money required to cover living expenses for one academic year in Norway and should be documented by enclosing a recent bank transcript with your application.
Quota Scheme
The MHS provides totally 12 scholarships for students from developing countries through the Quota Scheme. This is a programme funded by the Norwegian government The objective of the scheme is capasitybuilding of partnerinstitutions. Normally only applicants with a supportingletter and priority from our partnerinsitutions will be admitted on this programme. The scholarships are given to students both at the master in theology and master in global studies.
