The theology programme offers a full range of courses and degrees in theology, some of which are required for ordained service in The Church of Norway: B.Th., M.Th., M.Phil in Theology, Cand.theol., and Exam in Practical Theology and Ph. D. At the MHS this programme, however, is primarily profiled towards service in mission-work and inter-church relations abroad.
The major subjects of the bachelor programme are:
- Old and New Testament theology
- church history
- systematic theology
- missiology
- history of religion
The lectures in the B.Th programme will be given in Norwegian only.
The first year of the B.Th is the
Religious knowledge - basic course - 60 credits
The programme can be studied either as a separate unit or as part of some other university degree program. At Norwegian universities and university colleges the programme is recognized as a 60 credit unit.
The one year programme covers the first year of the B.Th. programme, and the disciplines are the same as in the elementary part of the theology programme.
The second year will include studies in the Hebrew and Greek languages.
This is a basic degree in theology, which is designed for use in ministries in church, mission and society. For candidates who wish to train for ordination in The Church of Norway the M.Th. and a year of practical theology are required in addition.
For the B.Th. programme and the basic religious knowledge course applicants must fulfil the requirements for immatriculation into universities, i.e. be graduated from Norwegian "videregående skole" or equivalent.
