A newly released book about cultures of the Indian Ocean
For his new book "Dhow Cultures and the Indian Ocean: Cosmopolitanism, Commerce, and Islam" the author, Abdul Sherrif, requested an illustration of sorabe from the collection of the Mission Archives.
The book is published by Columbia University Press.
Sorabe is an alphabet which makes use of Arabic in order to transcribe Malagasy language. The Mission Archives has one complete manuscript, bound in brown leather, and one page is presented in Sherrif's book.
