Current project (2009 - ): PhD project on Leviticus 1-16

  • Project title: Semantic Studies of Ritual and Moral Terminology in the Book of Leviticus 1-16.
  • Responsible: Olivier Randrianjaka (PhD student) and Magnar Kartveit (supervisor).
  • Funding: Norwegian Mission Society (Norway) and Danmission (Denmark).
  • Project description: The project is a semantic study of ritual and moral terminology in the book of Leviticus (chapters 1-16). It has been noticed that some terms - such as "sin offering", "wave offering" etc. - are not contextually (both with regard to textual context and to the contemporary reader's context) translated in the current Malagasy Bible translations and in other translations as well. Even when they may be satisfactorily translated, the meaning of expressions such as "laying on of hands" performed within the sacrificial office is under debate and no scholarly consensus has been reached. The project aims at doing a semantic analysis of some of these terms and expressions, in order to create a background for better translations.
