This is to invite you to the 20th conference of the Nigerian Association for Biblical Studies (NABIS) slated for Tuesday 3rd to Friday 6th July, 2007 at University of Jos, Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

 

The theme of the conference is ‘Biblical Studies and Leadership in Africa.

 

Eight commissioned papers are to be delivered at the conference by the following eminent biblical scholars:

·        Rt. Rev. Prof. J. O. Akao: “Leadership Ethics in Wisdom Literature from African Perspective”

·        Rev.Prof. D. T. Adamo: “David and the consequences of Declining Productivity: A lesson for Sit-Tight Leaders in Africa

·        Rev. Dr. C.O. Ogunkunle: “The Permanent Influence of Moses as the leader of a new nation in the context of leadershnip in Africa”.

·        Dr.Ariri Chidomere:“The Adequacy of Mosaic Ethics of the civil society for Civil Rule in Africa”.

·        Ven.Prof. Dapo Asaju: “The Parable of the Unjust Judge: A Review of the Role of the Judiciary in the Development of Democracy in Nigeria.”

·        Dr.J. D. Gwamna: The New Testatment on the issue of Unquestionable Obedience to Government in the context of Political Experience in Africa”.

·        Rev.Fr.(Dr) P. Arowele: “Episcopacy Today in the Light of the simple Structures of Church Government in the New Testament.”

·        Dr.(Mrs) D.O. Akintundet:“The Lucan View of the Roman System of Government according to the Acts of the Apostles.”

 

 

THEME and SUB-THEMES

 

Biblical Scholars who wish to present papers at the conference are free to choose their own topics which relate to the theme of the conference. Note that papers not relevant to the theme will not be slated for presentation. The following are some suggested topics.

OLD TESTAMENT

1.                   The Pharaoh of the Exodus and the “Modern Pharaohs” in Africa: the need for a sense of History.

2.                   Joseph, the Prime Minister of Egypt, as a Challenge and Role Model to Leaders in Africa.

3.                   Joshua’s leadership in Israel as a challenge to African Leaders.

4.                   An assessment of the failures and achievements of (Deborah, or Barrack, or Jephthah, or Gideon, or Samson) in Israel in the context of leadership in Africa today.

5.                   Samuel as a political and religious leader in the context of the roles played by Church leaders during the colonial period in Africa.

6.                   The Politics of Samuel; and King Saul in the context of the politicians who employ religion as a means of gaining political power in Nigeria.

7.                   The role of Nathan in the story of Uriah’s wife and the prophetic voice of the church in Nigeria.

8.                   David in the story of Uriah’s wife from the perspective of Leadership in Africa.

9.                   The family of Samuel or David as exemplar for the family in the making of leaders.

10.   A critical review of Solomon’s administrative set up in Israel in the context of the exploitation of the poor masses in Africa.

11.   Rehoboam in the context of modern political Dynasties in Africa.

12.   Military revolutions in the Northern Kingdom of Israel and military oligarchies in Africa.

13.   Josiah’s Reforms as a challenge to      political leaders in Africa.

14.   The roles of Prophet Isaiah the palace prophet: A challenge to modern palace prophets in Nigeria.

15.   Prophet Ezekiel and the palace prophets in Judah in the light of the light of the Nigerian experience.

16.   The relevance of the living voice of prophet Amos to the situation in Nigeria.

17.   Leadership in Africa from the perspective of the sermon on the Mount.

18.   John the Baptist’s injunctions to public officers: a challenge to public officers in Nigeria.

19.   Jesus’ denunciation of the Scribes and Pharisees in Matthew: lessons for religious and political leaders.
