Semester Opening Ceremony January 12th

The School of Mission and Theology (MHS) marks the opening of a new semester with a ceremony in the Aula on the 12th of January at 12:00 AM. Speeches will be given by Rector Bård Mæland and also by leaders of the Student Board. Bishop Ingeborg Midttømme, from the Diocese of Møre, is visiting the School and will on the occasion greet both students and teachers. Students who fullfilled their degrees in the fall semester of 2011 will at the ceremony receive their diplomas.

Lectures and devotions will commmence already on Monday 9 January.

Announcement of PhD fellowship in theology

The MHS School of Mission and Theology hereby announces one PhD fellowship in theology. The fellowship is expected to focus on migrant churches/congregations in Norwegian (or European) contexts. Deadline for applications is April 15, 2012.

The role of historical-critical methodology in African Old Testament studies

Knut Holter's article is published in the South African journal Old Testament Essays.

Magnar Kartveit's article is published in "Samaria, Samarians, Samaritans : studies on Bible, history and linguistics", vol. 6 i the series Studia Samaritana.

Philo Bibliography

Torrey Seland, professor and PhD-coordinator at MHS, is a member of The International Philo Bibliography Project  that regularly publishes bibliographic reviews of studies related to Philo of Alexandria. Now a major bibliography has been issued, covering the period of 1997-2006, published by Brill in the renowned series Supplements Vigiliae Christianae:

Onward Christian Soldiers

Last summer Kristin Fjelde Tjelle defended her doctoral thesis entitled Missionary masculinity: the case of the Norwegian Lutheran missionaries to the Zulus, 1870-1930. She studied official publications from the Norwegian Mission Society, such as journals and annual reports, as well as unpublished letters from missionaries to the society, and analyzed how “proper” masculinity was constructed among Norwegian missionaries in South Africa. Her  work is now gaining attention from several persons and milieus, and a nice presentation is available at KILDEN - Information Centre for Gender Research in Norway.

The Second commandment and human dignity in Africa

In his article, published in the journal Scriptura, Knut Holter interprets biblical texts on the Second commandment focusing on the question of human dignity in Africa.

Professor Magnar Kartveit turned 65

On Oct. 7, the School of Mission and Theology celebrated the 65th birthday of Professor teol.dr. Magnar Kartveit. Prof. Kartveit has been employed at the School of Mission and Theology since 1975, working within the field of the Old Testament.

A new dissertation is presented and defended

On Wednesday Oct. 5, 11.15am- , cand.theol. Gunnar Magnus Eidsvåg (see picture) will present and defend his dissertation on "The Septuagint of Zechariah. A Study of LXX-Zechariah as Translation and Interpretation." It is a comprehensive study of how the translator of the Hebrew Book of Zechariah translated this work into Greek, into the version now called the Septuagint.

Article by Øyvind Dahl in new book

Øyvind Dahl has written an article about the shifting language policy in Madagascar in "North-South Contributions to African Languages"

MHS' researches with articles in "The church going glocal : Mission and Globalisation"

The book is a result of the "Fjellhaug Symposium - Mission and Globalisation", held in april 2010. It contains contributions from Jan Opsal, Tomas Sundnes Drønen, Øyvind Dahl and Kjetil Aano.

Dr Knut Alfsvåg appointed Professor of Systematic Theology

In the meeting of the Board of the MHS School of Mission and Theology Thursday April 14, Dr Knut Alfsvåg was appointed Professor of Systematic Theology.

Michael Frost visited MHS 20th of January

Professor Michael Frost visited MHS the 20th of January. He gave two lectures for a auditorium filled with people. The lectures were orianized by MHS, NMS and Dawn Norge.

MGS gave me new and more perspectives on what I have expirienced and learnt in my job. After several years of jobs with child welfare, asylum seekers and prevention of prostitution and human trafficking, it was like an oasis to come to MHS and study.
