Centre for Medieval Studies

CMS is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (CoE) appointed by the Research Council of Norway. CMS is devoted to long-term, basic research.

CMS vision is to enhance our understanding of Europe as a whole, in the Middle Ages as well as today, from a peripheral point of view. The present transformation of Europe calls for new emphases on the continent's past, not least the period of European origin, the Middle Ages, when the tension between unity and diversity came into being.

CMS was officially launched 7 January 2003 and will be in operation for a five year period, which may be extended for another five years. MHS has been part of the CMS since the start in January 2003.

About 25 persons will be associated with the Centre. Apart from the core staff, doctoral/post doctoral positions and visiting professors/scholars will be associated with CMS.

MHS professor Torstein Jørgensen is the project leader of "Religion between Unity and Variety", which is one of four major projects in CMS.
